Performance and Attendance Records Rewritten At Bandimere Speedway

"I could not believe how friendly and receptive the fans were this weekend
at Bandimere. I've never heard a more enthusiastic crowd cheering and
gathering around the racers. This was the best race I've ever been to," said
new IDRC Nitto Tire Quick Class championship point's leader Brent Rau at the
2001 IDRC Import & Sport Compact Challenge race held this past Sunday at
Bandimere Raceway in Colorado. The points earned at this event allowed Brent
Rau and the Thermal R&D/Extreme Motorsports Mitsubishi team to inch past
Gary Gardella in the Ecko Unlimited/DC Sports Honda.
A record crowd of nearly 7,000 spectators and 521 racers could not have been
more pleased with the performances delivered by the quickest and fastest
import and sport compact racers in the world. Making the trek from
Farmington, Minnesota, Brent Rau set a new track elapsed time and mph record
for a Quick Class import with his historic 9.528-second blast that tripped
the beams at 152.68 mph. The crowd appreciated the effort made by Rau to
come to Colorado and they let him know it. As for the other racers in the
class, they did not disappoint the crowd. A mile-high in the sky, the
quickest field ever had one car in the 9s, five in the 10s and two running
11.1s.
In the Street Class, Ari Yallon qualified in the number one spot with an
11.286-second sprint that eclipsed at 130.42 mph. Teammate Steven Kan took
the number two spot with an 11.7, a full ½-second ahead of the closest in
the rest of the pack. Both cars advanced through the quarterfinals with
ease. Before the Semis could be run, a freak Thunderstorm cut the action
short. The heads-up races still in competition split the loot and the points
and looked forward to the next race.
For those living in or near Colorado, the date is set for October 7th for
the IDRC's Rocky Mountain Nationals. This race is expected to draw nearly
10,000 fans and 600 racers for the Continental Divide's season finale. For
the Southern California race fans and die-hard racers that compete in the
IDRC's championship circuit, the next dates to remember are July 28th and
July 29th when the IDRC transforms Los Angeles County Raceway into an
entertainment experience never before seen. The experience will be the
Advanced Clutch Technology IDRC Mid-Summer Nationals, the crucial 7th of 14
races in the IDRC's 2001 season. A sell-out crowd of 20,000 fans are
expected to see the 500 top racers in the world (including points leaders
like Brent Rau, Ari Yallon, the Forward Motion 9-second automatic Neon, and
the only west-coast appearance of the 7.4-second Hoyos Racing Focus), live
concert performances from Southern California's hottest band Cacawates, an
international break dancing contest, grudge-match qualifying and the

Currently, the IDRC's championship points race wouldn't be more exciting if
it were scripted in Hollywood. In the Nitto Tire Turbo Magazine Quick Class,
Rau has earned 213 points to Gardella's 212. Of the top five points leaders,
you'll find four different manufacturers (2 Honda Civics, a Mitsubishi
Eclipse, a Nissan Sentra and a Dodge Neon). In that's not close enough, the
situation in the Importdrag.com Street class presented by Sport Compact Car
is even more exciting. Currently, this race is a dead-heat with Ari Yallon
(RX7.com Mazda RX-7) and John Shepherd (Eagle Talon) both tied at 263
points. Jeff Hill and Steven Kan, the teammates of Shepherd and Yallon
occupy the three and four spots. Considering the magnitude of championship
dollars available in these classes (Quick $36,000, Street $17,500), it's no
wonder that the smart racers are in the IDRC championship chase.
The highest single-day racer attendance at an IDRC event continues the
string of successes for the IDRC. When the IDRC and its racers come to town,
there's only one place to be.
