FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE *** 07-12-01
Mitsubishi, Honda, Dodge and Nissan in Four Way Battle For Supremacy
It's the most competitive class in all of import/sport compact drag
racing.
The Nitto Tires IDRC Quick class has been featured at all six of the
IDRC
events thus far in the 2001 IDRC Championship season. Already, 65
drivers
from 17 different states and three separate countries have earned
points in
this war of speed and stamina.
Brent Rau of Farmington, Minnesota campaigns an all-wheel-drive
Mitsubishi
Eclipse. After his performance at the last IDRC event, Brent now leads
the
chase by just a one-point margin. Looking to retake the lead is Gary
Gardella of Jackson, New Jersey. Gary has been on-fire in East Coast
competition stringing together back-to-back victories in his
Cinderella-story rookie season. Gary crashes the gears on the Ecko
Unlimited/DC Sports Honda Civic. Preferring to let the transmission do
the
shifting is the most surprising team in the points chase. The Forward
Motion
team of Eden, North Carolina relies driver Mike Crawford and their
9-second,
automatic Dodge Neon to get past the competition. Competition has also
been
in the veins of Kosuke Kida of Osaka, Japan. Campaigning his Honda
Civic out
of the Signal Auto stable of Torrance, California has allowed this
driver a
dose of international fame. Looking for his chance in the spotlight,
James
Farrer of Mattawan, New Jersey is currently in Fifth place and chooses
a
Nissan Sentra-SE-R to get past the competition.
On Saturday, July 28th and Sunday, July 29th, the stage will be set for
the
biggest showdown in the history of the Nitto Tire Turbo Magazine Quick
Class. The showdown takes place at the Advanced Clutch Technology IDRC
Mid-Summer Nationals to be held at Los Angeles County Raceway in
Palmdale,
California. Rau, Gardella, Crawford and Farrer will face their stiffest
competition yet as Southern California's Quick class racers have other
ideas
about winning the championship. Already, the cast is set to include
over 30
Quick class vehicles that run in the 9s and 10s. "It just doesn't seem
fair
to have 30 to 50 awesome Quick-class cars and only 16 spots in the
qualifying ladder. Don't be surprised if the first-ever QUICK-32 is
unleashed at the Mid-Summer Nationals. We'll have official word on the
first-ever QUICK-32 by 6pm tomorrow, stay tuned" says National Director
Michael Ferrara.
The original heads-up class in import drag racing has become the most
lucrative. Thanks to the continued support from Nitto Tires and Turbo
Magazine, the IDRC will deliver the highest championship class payout
in the
history of the sport. The 2001 Nitto Tire Turbo Magazine Quick Class
IDRC
series champion will take home $25,000, $7,500 will go to the
runner-up, and
$3,500 will be awarded for finishing in Third. That's a total of
$36,000 of
the IDRC championship series purse of $128,500. These bonus payouts
are in
addition to the $5000 per event paid out at all of the Quick -XVI
competitions in the IDRC's 14 race 2001 season.
