2002 IDRC Race Results
A
Record Saturday followed by a Record Rain Sunday The Count that counts: (Sat. Only) 3778 fans, 378 racers
It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. Great weather and a record crowd defied the forecaster’s predictions on Saturday while rain and thunderstorms washed out the event on Sunday. The AUTO TRADER IDRC Championship Series delivered out the highest car count and spectator attendance to Maple Grove for the Saturday portion of the IDRC’s East Coast opener. This opener was not only attended by the best racers and fans of import and sport compact drag racing, but also a contingent of fresh new young faces competing in high-school drag and Junior dragster programs. Outlaws
Steal the Crowd The crowd went wild for Carlos Montano’s Pepe Loco Datsun. With wheels in the air in both First and Second, Carlos created some new import drag racing fans in an instant with 8.4-second performance during qualifying. El Viejo looked better than ever too, as fellow A’PEX Integration Outlaw class competitors El Alcalde and Fanny used this opportunity to get dialed. The action will only be quicker and faster as a number of Team Puerto Rico heroes will join current point’s leader Ron Lummus and his RLR Beetle at Atco Raceway for the IDRC All-Star Nationals on June 1st and 2nd. The
200mph Barrier
Buschur
Back In his first 2002 appearance, David Buschur and the Buschur Racing Eclipse made its first passes on the new season. After running 8.0s near the conclusion of last season, this little four-cylinder is anxious to break into the 7s. “This opportunity to shake down the car was much needed. We need to get the chassis set-up perfect and then we’ll start adding the horsepower,” said David before the race. David went on to say, “We’re going to be real happy when we crack into the 7s.” As David and the team got the car to run progressively quicker, the stage was set for a possible seven-second run on the final qualifying pass of the Saturday program. However, a small fluid leak would mean that the fans would have to wait until the IDRC All-Star Nationals. Leone
and Proudfoot Saverio
Leone and his AC Autotechnic Civic had the number one qualifying position before
the rainout. Angela Proudfoot managed a new personal best on a 10.18 at 140mph.
This was still on her smaller 26-inch slicks. With bigger slicks, Angela and her
team are confident that she’ll be deep into the 9s. Championship Points and the Chase The AUTO TRADER IDRC Championship has racers battling for $186,000 in year end divisional and national payouts. For the racers in attendance at Maple Grove, the upcoming IDRC All-Star Nationals at Atco Raceway on June 1st and 2nd will offer an opportunity for racers to earn double qualifying and elimination points. Racers that purchased a two-day tech card for the ACT IDRC East Coast Nationals will be issued a new two-day tech card for the Atco event at no charge. |
