The first casualty was the Ford/Borla-sponsored Ford Focus, driven by Ben Ma from AEBS in San Diego, CA. (You may remember this car from the 1999 IDRC/NHRA International Finals when Wayne Saunders made numerous 8-second runs in this car.) During Ben's first run the Focus got out of control mid-track and rolled upside down, colliding with the retaining wall. Ray Lochhead's 1995 Mazda RX-7 was the other victim on Saturday, as his car took a sudden right turn at 135mph and headed straight into the cement barricades by the finish line. Both drivers walked away from their accidents uninjured thanks to safety regulations by NHRA.The stage was set for an exciting race day on Sunday, but about an hour into the elimination round light rain began to fall and track officials halted the proceedings. During a break in the weather, track personnel broke out the propane torch in a valiant attempt to dry things off. But just when they were about to open the track to continue racing, a larger downpour caused NHRA and IDRC to officially cancel the race for the day. Get the complete article at GR8RIDE.com | ![]() |
