Mark Mazurowski and
the Titan Motorsports Supra made the trek west to Firebird International
Raceway in Arizona determined not to go home with a loss. With that in
mind, the 1994 Toyota blasted its way down the 1320 with a 9.53 at 172 mph
pass securing the top qualifying spot. In second was Ari Yallon’s Mazda
RX-7 with a qualifying time of 9.74, closely followed by Karl Martin and
Arizona’s own, Saad Saad. However, the top two qualifiers from the weekend
eventually met each other in the finals for a rematch from last month's
IDRC Rocky Mountain Nationals. With all the problems worked out since that
event, the Titan Motorsports Supra made sure Ari wouldn't steal another
Street Class win. Even with the better reaction time, Ari's 10.19 pass
couldn't compete with Mark's 9.73.

The 2002 IDRC
All-Motor Class elapsed time record holder, Shawn Geers, returned to IDRC
competition at the BFGoodrich Tires Compact Car Invasion. Geers in his
1967 VW Bug picked up right where it left off with a number one qualifying
pass of 10.66. The current All-Motor national points leader, Erick
Aguilar, qualified number two with a 10.70 pass, followed by Eddie Meza
and his RS Motorworks sponsored 1990 Honda CRX in the third qualifying
spot. Shawn Geers was determined to dominate the All-Motor Class for the
weekend but an unfortunate axle breakage forced an early retirement of the
VW. The door was now left open for Erick Aguilar and he was not about to
pass up the opportunity. With consistent 10.80 passes all weekend, the
class win went to Erick making him one of the most dominant forces in the
2002 IDRC All-Motor competition.

With the western
regional Quick Class championship still up for grabs, the top two front
runners, Bruce Mortensen and Jojo Callos, were present at the BFGoodrich
Tires Compact Car Invasion to battle it out. Both cars qualified less than
a tenth of a second apart from each other, with Bruce claiming the number
one qualifying spot with a 9.02 pass with Jojo running a 9.10. Third
qualifying place went to Leevon Eisele and his 2002 Honda Civic, who seems
to get faster and faster at each event. Plagued with turbocharger
problems, Jojo went out in the first round giving way to Utah’s Andrew
Tran. Andrew then sailed into the finals as his semi-final competitor,
Leevon, experienced problems as well. However, Team Venom proved too much
for Andrew and his XTR Motorsports Civic as Bruce blasted to the finish
line with a 10.62 winning pass.

The Outlaw Class also
showed the return of the Bergenholtz Racing CRX to IDRC competition. Ed
Bergenholtz managed a 9.47 pass in qualifying to secure the number two
spot. The top qualifying spot belonged to Ray Lochhead with a time of
8.54, and rounding off the top three was Ron Lummus and his 2002 VW
Beetle. As eliminations came around, Bergenholtz Racing had already
damaged two motors and was done for the weekend. That left Ray Lochhead
and Ron Lummus facing each other in the finals for the valuable western
regional points. With most of the bugs figured out in the VW, Ron stunned
the crowd and competition as he pulled an 8.52 blast against the RX-7.
This is Ron's best time ever and sets him up for a battle to the end with
Carlos “Pepe Loco” Montano for the 2002 Outlaw Class championship with
only three national events remaining.

Pro Class
Like the Quick Class,
the western regional Pro Class championship is still undecided. The two
contenders, Venom’s Toyota Tundra and A & L Racing’s Acura NSX, were
present at the BFGoodrich Tires Compact Car Invasion. Although the Toyota
Tundra of Grant Downing ran a best ever time of 6.96 at 203 mph during an
open time trial session, Grant struggled all weekend to back the time up.
After three rounds of qualifying, Adam Saruwatari claimed the top
qualifying spot with a 7.45 blast followed by Grant’s 7.62. In the finals,
a quicker reaction time got Adam the class win as the NSX crossed the
finish line first with a 8.74 compared to Grant’s 8.76 pass. |
