AUTO TRADER MAGAZINES IDRC CHAMPIONSHIP DRAG RACING

IDRC Hurricane Nationals Where Hot Weather Meets Hot Racing Action

BFGoodrich Tires Street Class

In the BFGoodrich Tires Street Class exciting racing action is not hard to find. Three different makes of cars owned the top three qualifying spots. In third place was the 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse of Michael Medina, second place went to the 1988 Mazda RX7 of Joey Gonzalez and holding the number one qualifying spot was the 1994 Toyota Supra of Jesus Rivera Jr. In the finals, Jesus Rivera Jr. went up against the number six qualifier Alain Aldo Otoro with his 1994 Mazda RX7, who battled all the way to the final by beating the number two qualifier. Unfortunately, Alain fell short and was defeated by Jesus proving why he was the number one qualifier and the BFGoodrich Tires Street class winner.

Importdrag.com All-Motor Class

The Importdrag.com All-Motor Class offered the closest and most exciting races once again at the Hurricane Nationals. Leading the pack was Domingo Alvarez with his 1973 Mazda RX3 and a best qualifying time of 11.53 @ 113.95 mph. In a close second was Jeremy Allen from Team InLine Pro, who made the trek from Virginia to better his eastern divisional points lead with an 11.58. Unfortunately, Chad Gibney who was posting consistent mid-11 timeslips all weekend knocked Jeremy out of competition at the semi-final round. In the finals, the number one qualifier, Domingo Alvarez went up against Chad Gibney’s 1990 Honda Civic. Although Domingo posted a faster ET of 11.44, the class win went to Chad as he treed the faster Mazda with a 0.42 light.

Turbo Magazine Quick Class

In the Turbo Magazine Quick Class, there were a lot of firsts over the weekend. Jennifer Williams was supposed to premier her new Project Midnight Integra at the Hurricane Nationals but a blown motor prevented her from doing so. This was also the first time new driver Matthew Keller got behind the wheel of the InLine Pro Civic since Jen Williams parted ways with her former team. Not too bad for a first timer as Matt qualified the car to the number two position with a 9.73 ET. The number one qualifying spot went to Frank Smith with his 2000 Honda Civic and not too far behind in third was Wrightouch Racing’s 1994 Mitsubishi Eclipse of Garry Marsh. Battling boost problems all weekend, the IDRC Quick Class points leader, Saverio Leone ended up as the 11th place qualifier and did not make it past the first round. In the end of the 16-car quick class melee, Garry Marsh came off victorious as he out drove the Hard Target Racing’s 1998 Toyota Celica of Luis Ferrer Jr.

APEX Integration Outlaw Class

The Apex Integration Outlaw Class showed no signs of slowing down as the number one qualifier spot went to Hard Target Racing’s 1982 Toyota of Alex Diequez with a blistering time of 8.35 @ 164.85 mph. Almost a full second behind, the number two qualifier Henry Garcia and his 1983 Toyota and the third qualifying spot went to the 2000 Acura Integra of Howard Spires. As the racing progressed, the 2000 Acura Integra of Howard Sipes bettered itself every run and with a little luck, made it all the way to the finals where he met the number one qualifier Diequez. Although Howard cut the better light and ran his personal best ET with a 9.78, he was still no match against Alex Diequez as he ran a quicker 8.43 capturing the class win for the weekend.

DRAG Sport Magazine Pro Class

Although qualifying over his opponent with a 8.51 ET, Ryan Garcia and his 1985 Mitsubishi Lancer ran into problems as the race progressed. With that in mind, the 1993 Mazda RX7 of Daniel Gonzalez laid the pedal to the metal and crossed the finish line with a 8.44 @ 159.85 mph to a losing effort of a 17.58 @ 74.39 mph by Ryan Garcia.
