Even though Ari Yallon arrived at
Bandimere Speedway on Sunday missing the first three rounds of qualifying,
he managed to steal the top qualifying spot away from Mark Mazurowski and
the Titan Motorsports Supra. John Shephard was in a close third place with
a qualifying time of 10.04. Plagued with problems all weekend, the Titan
Motorsports Supra went out early in the semis leaving the door wide open
for the current national points leader, Ari Yallon and the runner up, John
Shephard to a classic showdown at mile high. Both cars stepped up in the
finals, running their fastest times against each other but John’s 10.02
was no match for Ari’s 9.78 giving the RX7.com Mazda the class win and
championship points.

Saverio Leone made the trek to Colorado
from Pennsylvania with only one thing on his mind: to dominate this event
and secure the Quick Class championship. With that in mind, Sav laid the
law down with a 9.45 claiming the top qualifying spot for the Quick Class.
The remaining top three were J.J. Olson and Joel Tanzman with a 9.69 and
9.82 respectively. After the first round of eliminations, Leone and
Tanzman seemed like they were the guys to beat as they ran close to
identical times. But in the semis, an unfortunate nitrous backfire cost
Tanzman’s 1995 Toyota Supra the race, leaving Leone and Olson paired up in
the finals. In the finals, Olson fell asleep on the line cutting a 1.493
light, giving the easy win and the Quick Class championship to Saverio
Leone and his Impo/AC Autotechnic sponsored Honda Civic.

The Outlaw Class at the IDRC Rocky
Mountain Nationals had its first-ever fuel injected VW entry to date. Ron
Lummus, who grew tired of his problematic carbureted setup, made the
switch to methanol and fuel injection since the last IDRC event.
Saturday’s qualifying rounds were used to work out the gremlins on Lummus’
VW, while Carlos Montano’s 1971 Datsun 1200 and Mike Schillereff’s 1963 VW
Beetle secured the top two qualifying spots. Lummus finally managed to
make the show with a 10.32 pass, earning him the much needed qualifying
points. With Montano breezing into the finals with a bye run, all eyes
were on the two Beetles. Lummus finally laid down a 9.76 in the semis to
send Schillereff back to his trailer. However, Pepe Loco proved too much
for the 2002 VW Beetle in the finals. Carlos beat Ron to the finish line
by almost 3 seconds.

Piloting the only
pro car qualifying within the 9.99 class cut off, David Buschur was set on
putting on a show for the Colorado fans. Buschur ran every round of the
competition in an attempt to make a 7-second pass. However, the Buschur
Racing Talon ran a fastest time of 8.20 by the end of the event. But his
appearance secured him the Pro Class championship for the 2002 IDRC
season. |
